In 2014, Tevereterno staged an experimental workshop with William Kentridge and composer Philip Miller in an effort to build a creative team, to explore the array of live musical traditions present in Rome, and to raise community awareness for the Triumphs and Laments project. A week of rehearsals culminated in a workshop event at the outdoor plaza at MAXXI (Museo nazionale delle arti del XXI secolo), which simulated the scale and drama of the open-air Piazza Tevere site.
Isabelle Binet and Paolo Rocca brought together numerous musicians from across the city for a series of sound experiments that explored the concept of two opposing processional marching bands,. Kentridge and Miller joined Binet and Rocca as they delved into the historical melodies of Rome’s greatest victories and worst defeats throughout history. Musical themes ranged from funeral marches and lamentations to the riotous cacophony of celebratory revelries.
During the preparation of the workshop, shadow play tests were performed on the Piazza Tevere site and as part of the performance at MAXXI.
