Venice Architecture Biennale

The dramatic scale and potential future impact of Piazza Tevere, an open-air laboratory for contemporary art in the heart of Rome, drew curator Luca Molinari to invite Kristin Jones to share her dream for Rome within AILATI: Reflections from the Future in the Italian Pavilion at the 12th International Architecture Exhibition. Jones was one of few women and the only American in the pavilion, where she  presented drawings and proposals for the transformation of the Piazza Tevere site and 12 proposed artistic installations, realized together with architect Giuseppe Marino.

Jones invited Robert Hammond, co-founder of Friends of the High Line, to speak about the Tiber during the project’s presentation at the Biennale’s conference program. The presentation included a short film by Renato Chiocca, exploring the potential of a Tiber River Park “Ideas Competition,” through interviews with  Jones, Hammond and Reed Kroloff, designer of the High Line competition.

Riflessi and Fluviale, proposals for the Gaggiandre di Sansovino and the Rio del’Arsenal, were also presented at the Biennale’s Italian Pavilion. The proposed installations include projected animations (developed by Jones and Daniel K. Brown with Johann Nortje) and live immersive sound (original music compositions by David Monacchi and Walter Branchi).

Robert Hammond and Lisa Bielawa’s Chance Encounter on the Tiber, was transposed for the garden of the Italian Pavilion, featured in the exhibition’s opening program.
